Nothing will stop the international crew of the Last Leg Torch Run from delivering the Flame of Hope to the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023.
Not even a European downpour or flash flood.
After almost 20 straight Torch Runs through the stunning townships of Germany , the exhausted members of the international Last Leg LETR found themselves rained in while stopping for a break in the scenic city of Treptow on the outskirts of Berlin.
Not to be deterred, the gang launched into song before setting up an impromptu rowing demonstration in the centre of town.
Did we mention that they are exhausted!?
No surprise, really. It was an early start at the Berlin Police Academy meeting senior staff and recruits before launching into another FIVE Torch Runs for the day.
Speaking from Berlin, Matt said that by the time the Flame of Hope reached the base of Fernsehturm in Berlin – the fourth tallest free-standing structure in Europe and a key point in the Torch’s journey to the Opening Ceremony – the excitement was “starting to build”.
“We were greeted by hundreds of SO athletes, officials and volunteers from many parts of the world,” he said.
Three more Torch Runs to go. Standby for tomorrow’s post. The stage it set, the athletes are ready and torch runners from across the globe will carry the Flame of Hope into the stadium for the cauldron to be lit and Games declared OPEN.
